NEW DELHI: In Delhi, a significant number of illegal Bangladeshi immigrants are reportedly residing, prompting the Delhi Police to take stringent action to identify and address the issue. On Tuesday morning, a special drive was conducted in the slum areas of Madanpur Khadar, near Kalindi Kunj, with teams comprising local police and paramilitary forces.

During the drive, the Kalindi Kunj police station team inspected the Aadhaar cards, identification documents, and other credentials of slum residents. Each individual’s details were recorded, especially those involved in scrap-related work. Most residents claimed to be from Dhubri, Assam, and West Bengal, asserting that their Aadhaar cards were legitimately issued in Dhubri. They also stated that they have been living in Delhi for several years and are engaged in waste collection.

Nazmi, a resident of the slums, said she hails from Dhubri, Assam, and obtained her Delhi Aadhaar card to fulfill school admission requirements. She denied any connection to Bangladesh, adding that due to her limited education, she works in waste collection to make ends meet.

The police will now verify the submitted details with authorities in Assam and West Bengal. If any documents are found to be fake, the individuals will be arrested.

According to police sources, over 1,500 individuals have been identified as suspects across Delhi, and their documents are currently under scrutiny. So far, the South-East District Police has identified and arrested eight illegal Bangladeshi immigrants in their district. Additionally, 10 more illegal immigrants have been apprehended from Outer Delhi.

This action follows directives from Delhi Lieutenant Governor Vinay Kumar Saxena, who emphasized the need to identify and take action against illegal Bangladeshi residents in the city. Arrested individuals are being handed over to the Foreigner Regional Registration Office (FRRO) and will subsequently be deported to Bangladesh.
