NEW DELHI: The Inland Waterways Authority of India (IWAI) and the Delhi government’s Irrigation & Flood Control Department (I&FC) have taken a significant step towards enhancing urban transport and promoting environmental sustainability by introducing an eco-friendly boat taxi service on the Yamuna River. This initiative is part of a broader plan to improve connectivity and reduce congestion in the national capital.
The project, outlined in a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed by both parties, aims to launch a ferry ride or boat taxi service along a 7km stretch from Sonia Vihar to the Hanuman temple near Wazirabad barrage and back. The route is designed to provide a scenic and efficient mode of transport for daily commuters and tourists alike. The plan was detailed in an expression of interest (EOI) floated in September 2024, with I&FC holding two meetings in October.
The boats to be used for this service are designed to be environmentally friendly, utilizing electric or solar hybrid technology. Each boat will have a seating capacity of 20-30 passengers and will travel at a speed of 5-7 knots with a maximum draft of 1.2 meters. The infrastructure support for the project includes polyethene floating jetties, navigational aids, and a shore facility providing e-charging, with contributions from IWAI, the Delhi Development Authority (DDA), and the Delhi Jal Board (DJB).

Environmental assessments have been conducted to ensure the project does not adversely affect the river’s ecosystem. In 2023, the Indian Navy, using INS Barasingha, carried out a navigability assessment that confirmed the river’s depth varies from 0.9 meters to 4 meters between ISBT Kashmere Gate and ITO, making it suitable for navigation. The project has also received permission from the National Green Tribunal (NGT) after a thorough review of its environmental impact.
While the project is still in its early stages, with an affidavit and indemnity bond from IWAI pending, it has the potential to transform urban transportation in Delhi. By providing a sustainable and efficient alternative to road transport, the Yamuna boat taxi service promises to improve connectivity and reduce traffic congestion, paving the way for a greener future in the capital.
