Delhi Chief minister Arvind Kejriwal announced a ‘Samman Rashi’ of ₹1 crore for the family of Delhi Police Assistant sub-inspector (ASI) Shambhu Dayal Sharma on January 11.

Sharma got wounded following a stabbing while trying to catch a mobile snatcher on January 4. He passed away in the hospital in West Delhi’s Mayapuri area on January 8.

Grieving the loss of the brave officer, CM Kejriwal said, “ASI Shambhu Dayal did not even care for his life to protect the public and became a martyr. We are proud of him.”

“No amount can compensate for the loss of a loved one’s life, but we will provide his family with a ‘Samman Rashi’ as a mark of honour and respect. For the safety of society, Shambhu Dayal fulfilled his duty by risking his life, now it is our duty to take care of the family of such a brave policeman,” CM Kejriwal said.

Sharma had gone to the spot after he received a call about mobile snatching. A woman complainant had made the call.

Kejriwal further said that Sharma took the complainant to the locality to identify the accused person. “The woman pointed out the accused, and Shambhu Dayal Ji caught him. While he was taking the accused to the police station, the person pulled out a knife that he had kept hidden under his shirt and stabbed him. ASI Shambhu Dayal was taken to BLK Hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries.”

He also said: “We rarely see such officers who can put their lives at risk for the security of the common man and the country. Delhi is proud of an officer like Shambhu Dayal. The entire country is proud of him. No amount can compensate for a loved one’s life. Such bravehearts are an asset to the country and their family.”

“To honour his service to the nation and the police department, the Delhi government will give ₹1 crore as ‘Samman Rashi’ to his family. I pray to God that Shambhu Dayal’s soul rests in peace and his family gather the courage to handle the loss,” CM Kejriwal added.

The CM also tweeted, “For the safety of society, Delhi Police ASI Shri Shambhu Dayal ji fulfilled his duty by risking his life. Delhi and the whole country are proud of his martyrdom. Now it is our duty to take care of the family of such a brave policeman.”
