NEW DELHI: The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) has accused the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) of deliberately planning and executing the recent floods in Delhi. The AAP has demanded a thorough investigation and the filing of a First Information Report (FIR) against those responsible for the flooding.
According to senior AAP leader and Rajya Sabha MP Sanjay Singh, the floods in Delhi were meticulously crafted by the BJP to harass and punish the residents of Delhi and defame Chief minister Arvind Kejriwal.
Singh said that the BJP has conspired to unleash this planned flood, causing immense distress to the people of Delhi. He further asserted that the BJP deliberately diverted water from the Hathni Kund reservoir towards Delhi instead of utilising the Eastern-Western Canals. This intentional diversion resulted in unprecedented flooding in the capital city, even in the absence of heavy rainfall.

Singh stated, “The flooding problem in Delhi is a calculated plan by the BJP and the central government. This is not a natural calamity but a manufactured crisis inflicted upon Delhi. Whether it is the Prime Minister, his party, or his government, their motive remains the same – to harass and punish the people of Delhi and defame the name of Arvind Kejriwal.”
It is worth noting that there has been no rainfall in Delhi over the past 6 days, yet the Yamuna River has exceeded its danger mark, breaking historical records.
Singh further shared facts, stating that from July 9 to July 13, no water was released into the Eastern and Western canals according to the logsheet of the Hathni Kund barrage. Instead, all the water was deliberately directed into Delhi, with the BJP government allegedly aiming to submerge the city and its residents in floods.

Delhi minister Saurabh Bharadwaj said that previous instances of water release, such as the 4 lakh cusecs released on August 10-11, 2022, did not result in the Yamuna River reaching the danger mark as the water was equitably released towards Delhi, Haryana and UP. However, this time, a staggering 3.5 lakh cusecs of water were intentionally directed solely towards Delhi, causing the water level of the Yamuna River to rise three metres above the danger mark.
Expressing his concerns, he criticised the BJP leaders for their uninformed statements, explaining that the role of a water regulator is solely to distribute water, contrary to the BJP’s claims.
Bharadwaj alleged that the BJP went to the extent of planning to flood the Supreme Court. Highlighting the severity of the situation, Bharadwaj accused the BJP of resorting to political conspiracies to flood non-BJP-ruled states.

Bhardwaj stated, “Despite the absence of even moderate rainfall in the city for the past six days, Delhi finds itself inundated and the Yamuna River has surged beyond its danger mark. Today, we present to you irrefutable evidence that demonstrates the deliberate release of water from the Hathini Kund Barrage in Haryana to submerge Delhi.”
“This is not a mere natural calamity but rather a deliberate attempt by the governments at the Centre and Haryana, both ruled by the BJP, to inflict havoc upon the people of Delhi,” he added.
Hathini Kund barrage is located in Yamunanagar, Haryana, approximately 228 kilometres from Delhi. Water is released from Hathini Kund Barrage through three channels: the Eastern Canal, the Western Canal, and the Yamuna River itself.

The Western Canal, traversing through Haryana, eventually reaches Haiderpur in Delhi, while the Eastern Canal supplies water to Saharanpur in Uttar Pradesh.
As for the Yamuna, it flows directly near the key streets of Delhi, passing through Okhla. Water released into the Yamuna River from this regulator takes approximately 48 hours to reach Delhi, thus causing delayed detection of intentional manipulation of water levels.
