NEW DELHI: After a five-month halt, the long-awaited old age pensions for nearly 1 lakh elderly residents of Delhi have been restored.
The central government had withheld the pension funds for months, causing significant distress among the elderly population.
Delhi Finance Minister Atishi announced the restoration of the pensions during a press conference, stating that the funds for the past five months began being credited to the beneficiaries’ bank accounts yesterday.
“In Delhi, 4 lakh elderly people receive pensions. Of these, 1 lakh pensions are provided by the central government and 3 lakhs by the Delhi government. For the last five months, the central government had stopped these 1 lakh pensions, causing much distress,” Atishi said.
She highlighted the struggles of the elderly during this period, noting how many felt abandoned without Kejriwal’s direct intervention. “These elderly people used to come to our house, sometimes to my office, deeply troubled.
They felt that because Arvind Kejriwal, whom they consider their son, is in jail, their pensions were suspended, and no one was fighting for them.”
Atishi emphasised that despite being in jail, Kejriwal never stopped advocating for the elderly. “Even in jail, Arvind Kejriwal has been worried about the elderly in Delhi, whom he considers his parents. Every time I visited him, his first concern was whether the elderly had received their pensions.”

She further credited Kejriwal’s determination for the breakthrough, saying, “Despite being in jail, Arvind Kejriwal fought the Indian People’s Party’s central government, and now the pensions have started being credited.” As of yesterday, 90,000 elderly individuals have received their pensions, with the remaining 10,000 expected to have their funds by this evening.
