New Delhi: In a significant development, Delhiโ€™s Rouse Avenue Court has granted interim relief to Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) MLA Amanatullah Khan, staying his arrest until February 24. Khan, who represents the Okhla constituency in Delhi, had filed an anticipatory bail plea to avoid arrest in connection with allegations of assaulting a police team.

During the hearing, Khanโ€™s lawyer argued that the MLA is willing to cooperate with the investigation and claimed that the charges against him are baseless. The court directed that Khanโ€™s interrogation take place at the Jamia Nagar police station, ensuring the presence of CCTV cameras during the process.

The case stems from an incident on Monday when Delhi Police registered an FIR against Khan, accusing him of leading a mob that allegedly attacked a police team in Jamia Nagar. According to the police, the mob, led by Khan, helped an accused, Shabaz Khan, escape custody. Shabaz Khan is facing charges of attempted murder.

The police stated that the incident occurred when a Crime Branch team attempted to arrest Shabaz Khan, a wanted criminal, in the Jamia area. While the team managed to apprehend Shabaz, Amanatullah Khan arrived at the scene with 20-25 supporters. Khan reportedly confronted the police, questioning their authority and stating, โ€œHow dare you come here? I donโ€™t recognize such police or courts.โ€ The MLA and his supporters allegedly assaulted the police team, engaged in a scuffle, and even snatched an officerโ€™s ID card.

Khan, however, has denied the allegations, claiming that the individual the police intended to arrest had already been granted bail. The courtโ€™s decision to stay his arrest provides temporary relief to the AAP legislator as the investigation continues.
