Both parties seek to take credit of beautification work in run up G20 Summit
NEW DELHI: Amid a tug of war between the AAP and BJP regarding the G20 Summit preparations, Delhi minister Saurabh Bhardwaj on Tuesday responded to the BJP’s claims by asserting that the Aam Aadmi Party-led government did not receive any funds from the Centre for the beautification of the national capital.
The summit is scheduled to take place for September 9 and 10.
Minister Bhardwaj said that chief minister Arvind Kejriwal’s government conducted major revamp and beautification work in the old Delhi area, including revamping Ghalib’s Haveli to preserve its heritage.
On Sunday, Delhi BJP chief Virendra Sachdeva contended that the makeover of the national capital was financially supported by the Central government.

During his inspection in Central Delhi, Bhardwaj rebutted Delhi BJP’s assertions and clarified that the Delhi government had not received any financial assistance from the Centre for the beautification work related to the G20 summit, emphasizing that the state government hadn’t even submitted such a funding request.
He also clarified that development initiatives in PWD and MCD regions were financed by the respective agencies. Recognizing the event’s international prominence and its representation of India’s prestige, he affirmed, “We are committed to leaving no stone unturned in creating an exemplary impression.”
Bhardwaj viewed the G20 summit as an opportunity to elevate the city’s aesthetic and environmental standards. He highlighted that CM Arvind Kejriwal had instructed all departments to fully mobilize civic agencies in preparation for the event, ensuring beautification across tourist spots, underlining the city’s dedication to cleanliness and sustainability. However, he added, “We need to strike a balance between showcasing India’s rich cultural heritage and guaranteeing smooth traffic flow and security protocols for visiting delegates.” He mentioned that discussions on this matter are ongoing.

Meanwhile, Delhi Mayor Dr Shelly Oberoi expressed full confidence in the Municipal Corporation’s preparedness to host this significant event, stressing MCD’s commitment to serving the people and portraying a positive image of the country.
She urged all political parties to rise above partisan politics and refrain from pursuing trivial gains. “This transcends mere political affiliations; it concerns our nation’s honor in the eyes of esteemed international guests. Any shortcomings would be a shared blot on our nation.”
While inspecting ongoing work at Ghalib’s Haveli, Dr Oberoi reiterated her dedication to showcasing the rich heritage and culture of old Delhi through various initiatives.
Following the inspection at Ghalib’s Haveli, both Bhardwaj and Mayor Oberoi examined the transformation brought to Chandni Chowk, revitalizing the essence of the historic market. Subsequently, they visited the G20 park in M Block, Greater Kailash, which was adorned with vibrant lights.
