Struggling to pay a debt, all six members of a family died by suicide after consuming poison in New Area of Nawada district in Bihar, the police said on Thursday.

As per the police, the family of Kedar Lal Gupta was continuously harassed by a lender who gave them some money. It was immediately not clear why the family took the loan.

Three people have been arrested in connection with the case.

Fed with daily harassment and insult, Gupta along with his wife, and daughters Gudiya Kumar (20), Sakshi Kumari (18), Shavnam Kumari (19) and son Prince (17) consumed pesticides near a majar in Adarsh Society area.

They were rushed to a nearby hospital by locals with the help of police but doctors could not save the life of any of them.

Speaking to media persons, Superintendent of Police (SP) Gaurav Mangla said: “Prima facie, it looks like a case of suicide. As per locals, the family was in debt and was struggling to repay it. But we are investigating all angels.”

In a suicide note written on November 8, a family member wrote that they had already paid two to three times in interest on the principal amount. Local goons had “crossed all limits of harassment”, the note reads.

The note said that Manish Singh, Vikas Singh, Vijay Singh, Tuntun Singh Khatal, Dr Pankaj Sinha, and Ranjit Singh – all residents of New Area – were torturing the family to pay the rest.

Native of Rajauli village in Nawada, the Gupta family had been living in a rented accommodation in New Area locality for around 20 years. Kedar Lal Gupta worked as a fruit seller to run the household and fund his children’s studies.

Two of the family members died on the spot, while four others lost their lives during treatment.

In a statement to the police, son Price said that the family was under huge pressure to repay the loan.
