The death of the younger brother of Union minister of state Ashwini Choubey had once again put the focus on the Bihar government’s fast-crumbling medical facilities.

Choubey’s younger brother, Nirmal, who resides in Bhagalpur, suffered a heart attack. The relatives rushed him to Jawaharlal Nehru Medical College and Hospital, where he was admitted to the ICU at 4 pm.

Relatives of Choubey alleged that there was not a single doctor in the ICU. Choubey’s relative Chandan said, “He (Choubey) felt physical discomfort so we brought him here.”

“But there was no doctor here. ICU is running without a doctor. There were no superintendents, senior and junior doctors in the hospital. You can check the CCTV,” one of the relatives alleged.

“The hospital staff says that the doctor is only available on call. They came to the hospital only if there was an emergency,” the grieving relative said.

“It is due to the negligence of the medical staff that (Nirmal) Choubey died,” he added.

Angry relatives of Choubey protested for two hours in the hospital, demanding strict action against those responsible.

Police responded to the scene as soon as they received information about the incident and began an investigation. They also pacified the angry relatives.

The hospital superintendent has suspended two doctors for being absent from the ICU. A copy of the order was also given to pacify the agitated relatives of the deceased.

Speaking on the matter, the superintendent of the hospital, Dr Aseem Das, said, “The patient was brought in in a critical condition. It was found that there had been a massive heart attack. The senior doctor gave him the necessary medicine. After this, he was shifted to the ICU, but there was no doctor there. I have suspended two doctors.”

Bhagalpur City DSP Ajay Kumar Chowdhary said, “When a complaint is received in this matter, we will conduct an inquiry. Action will be taken against whoever is found negligent in this regard.”

“If the aggrieved party has created a ruckus and due to this the doctor ran away from the spot, then action will be taken against him also,” he said.

The death shed new light on Bihar’s rapidly deteriorating government medical facilities. A point well highlighted by one of the grieving relatives, “If there is such negligence for a relative of a Union minister, one can only imagine what hardship a common person faces (while dealing with a government medical facility).”
