NEW DELHI: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has reported that Cyclone Remal, currently developing in the Bay of Bengal, is expected to reach the coastal regions of West Bengal and adjoining Bangladesh as a severe cyclonic storm by the evening of May 26.

According to IMD, a well-marked low-pressure area over the west-central and adjoining south Bay of Bengal has moved north eastward and is expected to develop into depression by the morning of May 24. The depression is forecast to intensify into a cyclonic storm by May 25, moving northward towards the Bangladesh and West Bengal coasts.

The IMD has issued a warning for heavy rainfall over West Bengal’s coastal districts, North Odisha, and parts of Northeast India, including Mizoram, Tripura and South Manipur, on May 26 and 27. Light to moderate rainfall is expected in most areas, with isolated heavy to very heavy rainfall in the coastal districts of North 24 Parganas, South 24 Parganas, and Purba Medinipur.

Fishermen have been advised not to venture into the south Bay of Bengal until May 24, the central Bay of Bengal until May 26, and the north Bay of Bengal from May 24 to the morning of May 27. Those already at sea are urged to return to the coast immediately.

IMD has also forecasted strong winds and rough sea conditions. Gale winds with speeds of 60–70 kmph, gusting up to 80 kmph, are expected in the north Bay of Bengal from the morning of May 25. Wind speeds could reach 100–110 kmph, with gusts up to 120 kmph over the north Bay of Bengal and 70–80 kmph, with gusts up to 90 kmph over the central Bay of Bengal, from May 26 for the next 24 hours.

The coastal regions of Bangladesh, West Bengal, and north Odisha are likely to experience squally winds ranging from 40 to 50 kmph, gusting up to 60 kmph, from the evening of May 25.

Additionally, the Election Commission of India (ECI) has alerted district administrations to take necessary precautions for the Phase 6 Lok Sabha polls on May 25 in West Bengal. The state’s Chief Electoral Officer, Ariz Aftab, held a meeting with police superintendents and disaster management officials to ensure all measures are in place to handle the storm’s impact during the elections. Eight constituencies in West Bengal, including Tamluk, Kanthi, Ghatal, Jhargram, Medinipur, Purulia, Bankura, and Bishnupur, are set to vote on this day.
