SRINAGAR: A jawan of the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) was killed and another was injured in a terror attack in Srinagar city, and three civilians including two non-Kashmiris were wounded in two different attacks in southern Kashmir on Monday.

Head Constable Vishal Kumar and Assistant Sub-Inspector Niran Jan Singh were critically injured after terrorists fired upon them in the busy Maisuma area of Srinagar on Monday evening. Vishal later succumbed to his injuries and Singh was being treated at a hospital.

Police said that terrorists opened indiscriminate fire on a CRPF party, leaving the duo critically injured. They were shifted to a hospital and one of them was declared brought dead, it said.

A cordon and search operation was launched in the area, the police said. The attack created panic in Maisuma and nearby Lal Chowk and people rushed to safer places.

“At about 15:30 hours (3:30 pm), terrorists fired upon two CRPF personnel in Maisuma area of Srinagar resulting in critical gunshot injuries to the both personnel. The injured personnel were immediately evacuated to a nearby hospital for the treatment. However, HC Vishal Kumar succumbed to his injuries and attained martyrdom,” police said.

“Keeping in view the huge rush of people and to avoid any civilian causality, security forces exercise maximum restraint,” the police added.

A case has been registered a case under relevant sections of law and initiated investigation in the case. Officers continue to work to establish the full circumstances of the terror crime while the whole area had been cordoned off with the help of reinforcement and search in the area is going on, the police stated.

Three persons including two non-local labourers were also injured in two different militant attacks in Shopian and Pulwama districts of southern Kashmir.

In Shopian, police said, terrorists fired at a civilian identified as Sonu Kumur Baljee, son of Jankee Nath in Chotigam area of Shopian, adding that he was rushed to the district hospital Shopian for treatment while the area was cordoned off.

Earlier in the day, two non-local labourers were fired upon in Lajroo area of Pulwama. “Terrorists fired upon two labourers identified as Patleshwar Kumar and Jakku Chaudhary, residents of Bihar in Lajoora area of Pulwama,” police said.

“Both the labourers received gunshot injuries and were immediately shifted to hospital for treatment where their condition is stated to be stable. Police has registered a case under relevant sections of law and initiated investigation into the matter,” it further said. The incident took place less than 24 hours after two labourers were fired upon in the Litar area of Pulwama on Sunday evening.
