NEW DELHI: The Delhi Police’s Crime Branch which took over the investigation into the December 19 altercation in Parliament is reportedly considering summoning Rahul Gandhi as an accused.

The development comes as police prepare to record statements from two injured MPs and gather crucial evidence, including CCTV footage and witness accounts, to piece together the sequence of events.

The case could pose significant challenges for Rahul Gandhi. Following the FIR, police officials are likely to record the statements of the two injured MPs, Pratap Chandra Sarangi from Odisha and Mukesh Rajput from Uttar Pradesh, and may summon the Congress leader for questioning.

Investigation Details

A senior police official mentioned that CCTV footage from the incident site will be crucial in the investigation. The police plan to request the footage and reach out to media outlets for any available video evidence. Additionally, the police may recreate the scene to gather further insights.

Background of the Incident

The confrontation erupted following Home Minister Amit Shah’s remarks on Dr. B.R. Ambedkar, which led to heated exchanges between BJP and Congress MPs near the Parliament’s main gate. Sloganeering escalated into a physical altercation, leaving two MPs injured.

The BJP has accused Rahul Gandhi of instigating violence, alleging that he was involved in “physical assault and provocation” during the scuffle. Subsequently, an FIR was registered at the Parliament Street Police Station against Rahul Gandhi under sections of the Indian Penal Code, including 117 (intentional infliction of serious injury), 125 (endangering life or personal safety), 131 (use of criminal force), 351 (criminal intimidation), and 3(5) (common intent).

Congress, in response, has lodged a counter-complaint, alleging that BJP MPs pushed party president Mallikarjun Kharge and physically engaged with Rahul Gandhi. The Delhi Police has sought legal advice on whether to register a separate FIR based on Congress’ complaint.

As the investigation unfolds, both parties continue to trade allegations, deepening the political rift and drawing public attention to the dramatic turn of events in the Parliament.
