NEW DELHI: Kirti Azad, the 1983 World Cup-winning cricketer and Trinamool Congress (TMC) MP, tragically lost his wife, Poonam Jha Azad, on Monday.

The tragic news was shared by Azad on social media platform X, where he wrote, “My wife, Poonam, is no more. She left for her heavenly abode at 12:40 PM. Thank you all for your good wishes.” On Tuesday, Kirti Azad shared a photo from the last rites, with the caption: “Alvida Poonam…”

Azad, who currently serves as the TMC MP for Bardhaman-Durgapur in West Bengal, received an outpouring of support from political leaders across party lines.

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee expressed her deep sorrow over the loss. In a heartfelt message, she said, “I am saddened to learn that Poonam Jha Azad, the wife of our MP and World Cup-winning cricketer Kirti Azad, has passed away. I have known Poonam for a long time and was aware of her critical illness. Kirti and other family members did their utmost and were always by her side in her final battle. My sincere condolences to Kirti and his family. May her soul rest in peace.”

AIMIM chief Asaduddin Owaisi also offered his condolences to Azad, stating, “My condolences to you, and may Almighty grant you patience and strength on your wife’s demise.”

Notably, Poonam Azad was also a politician who began her career with the BJP, later joined the Aam Aadmi Party, and eventually became a member of the Congress. Poonam Jha Azad had been battling a prolonged illness and was even seen in a wheelchair alongside Kirti Azad during his 2024 Lok Sabha election campaigns.

Kirti Azad, a former cricketer, was part of India’s historic 1983 World Cup-winning team. More recently, he entered politics and became the Member of Parliament for Bardhaman-Durgapur under the TMC banner, defeating BJP’s Dilip Ghosh.
