THIRUVANANTHAPURAM, KERALA: Making its political stance clear, the Communist Party of India (Marxist) in Kerala has decided to hold protests across the state along with like-minded Muslim outfits against the implementation of the proposed Uniform Civil Code (UCC) law. The decision was conveyed by party state secretary MV Govindan on Sunday.

The party secretary warned that it will hold anti-CAA like protests against the proposed law by the centre and also condemned the stance of the Congress party, which has not been able to come up with a ‘unified’ stance over the matter.

The statement comes on the same day that a prominent Muslim outfit named Samastha Kerala Jem-iyyathul Ulama, a Sunni scholarly outfit, decided to oppose the proposed UCC.

“CPI(M) will strongly oppose the UCC. We will conduct a state-level seminar in Kozhikode against the law and conduct seminars across the state to create awareness on the matter.” Govindan said.

“One of the intentions behind such a proclamation is to destroy the plurality existing in our society. The RSS and the Sangh Parivar groups have decided to ‘parade’ the Prime Minister for propagating the theory. The Congress is not in a position to take a unified stand on the matter where other opposition parties have already opposed it,” Govindan added.

“Prime Minister’s statement hinting at formulating a law in this regard is nothing but to push forward the Hindutva agenda that the BJP is already pursuing. All secular parties and secular-minded groups should oppose this law. No communal groups will be allowed to join the seminars,” he added.

Govindan also said that Congress will not be allowed to participate in CPI(M)’s seminars. “Congress will not be allowed to participate in our seminars. The Congress party’s position in this matter is strange and ironic. The party has multiple views on the matter. Rahul Gandhi himself doesn’t have an opinion on the matter. This shows the callous attitude of the party,” the party secretary added.

Meanwhile, senior Congress leader VD Satheeshan has stated that the party will oppose the UCC vehemently and stated that the central government has come up with the matter to divide people on religious lines and reap electoral dividends during the election year.

Top CPI(M) sources have clarified that the party will tread with caution as the party leaders are closely watching the Indian Union Muslim League’s (IUML) plans to pursue the matter.
