Manish Sisodia speaks about Vinesh Phogat's disqualification from Olympics

NEW DELHI: Senior Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader Manish Sisodia addressed his supporters after getting bail from the Supreme Court, on Saturday where he used the opportunity to launch an attack on the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), raising serious concerns over the recent disqualification of wrestler Vinesh Phogat from the Olympics.

In a fiery speech at the AAP headquarters, Sisodia suggested a conspiracy behind Phogat’s disqualification, calling it a “tyrannical act.” He said, “Desh ki beti ke saath khel kia gaya hai. (They have conspired against the country’s daughter) Everyone knows who has done what.”

He walked out of Tihar Jail on Friday evening after being granted bail by the Supreme Court in connection with an alleged money laundering case linked to the Delhi liquor policy.

Sisodia referenced the protests led by Phogat in 2023 against BJP leader Brij Bhushan Singh, then a BJP MP and the Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) chief, who was accused of sexual harassment. “For the past few days, I’ve been watching TV, and I saw a little girl from a village in our country who proudly waves our nation’s flag in sports. And when she stands up and says that not just any officer from your party, but a leader appointed by you harassed her, you don’t even have him arrested,” he remarked, accusing the government of shielding the accused while launching a social media campaign to discredit Phogat.

The protest led by Phogat, who was recently disqualified from competing in the 50kg freestyle wrestling category for being over the weight limit, has continued to gain attention. Sisodia condemned the government’s response, saying, “This is tyranny when you don’t even arrest him. And we’ve seen the horrific outcome of this tyranny.”

He further added, “We dream of making our children champions, telling our daughters to jump high and conquer the world. But if one of your cronies harasses them, are we supposed to tolerate it? This is tyranny when you don’t even arrest him. And we’ve seen the horrific outcome of this tyranny”

Talking about Vinesh Phogat’s Paris Olympics disqualification, he said, “Everyone knows what happened to that girl and who did it. If today she sheds tears, it’s clear that something has been done to her, and everyone knows it.”

Sisodia’s release was a significant moment for AAP supporters. As he exited Tihar Jail at 6:45 pm, he was greeted by party leaders Atishi, Sanjay Singh, and Durgesh Pathak, along with hundreds of supporters who showered him with rose petals.
