Congress’s Kharge, Gandhi in Srinagar for J&K election strategy

SRINAGAR: Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge and President AICC/Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi reached Srinagar on Tuesday evening for a crucial discussion over preparations for the forthcoming assembly elections in the Union Territory (UT).

 

Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge, President AICC, Member Parliament and Leader of the Opposition in Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi, General Secretary INC and Member Parliament KC Venugopal reached Srinagar International Airport from Delhi in a special chartered flight at 5 pm today.

 

 

Congress representatives will conduct a session with all district delegates at the Radisson Collection Hotel, Rajbagh in Srinagar at 10.30 am tomorrow, and by 2 pm, they will head to Jammu. They will return to Delhi tomorrow evening, the sources said.

 

Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge and President AICC Rahul Gandhi are expected to meet with NC leader Dr Farooq Abdullah and his son Former Chief Minister Omar Abdullah to consider a pre-election alliance.

Congress is working to unite all anti-Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) groups to forge a strong coalition to challenge the BJP in the UT.

 

The trip follows Kharge and Gandhi’s meeting with general secretaries, in-charges, and screening committee members of four election-bound states on Monday.

 

 

“On 21st and 22nd August, Congress Chief Shri Mallikarjun Kharge ji and Opposition Leader Shri Rahul Gandhi ji will be heading to Jammu and Srinagar for crucial discussions in preparation for the forthcoming assembly elections”, Congress National General Secretary (Organisation) K C Venugopal shared on X.

 

On Monday, Congress National General Secretary Gulam Ahmed Mir stated in Jammu that “Kharge ji and Rahul ji will be heading to Jammu and Kashmir for two days, starting tomorrow. They will reach Jammu tomorrow afternoon. Mir mentioned that during their visit, they will participate in extensive discussions with leaders and workers in both Jammu and Srinagar, aiming to energise and reinforce the organisations’ cadre.”

After their interaction in Jammu, they will fly to Srinagar on Wednesday evening to continue their interactions with the cadre there. On Thursday, they will host a press briefing in Srinagar.

 

After the session on Monday, Venugopal informed reporters that the leaders discussed preparations for elections in Jammu and Kashmir, Haryana, Jharkhand, and Maharashtra, and guidelines for choosing candidates.

 

Also, newly-appointed Jammu and Kashmir Congress head Tariq Hameed Karra said on Monday that the organisation is open to negotiations with like-minded groups to form a “respectable alliance” for the Jammu and Kashmir assembly elections, but the terms for such a partnership would be distinct from the Lok Sabha elections.
