NEW DELHI: On Friday, Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge urged party workers to start preparing for the upcoming Delhi and Bihar elections next year during the CWC meeting. He cautioned that a favourable pre-election atmosphere doesn’t always guarantee victory. Kharge emphasized the importance of identifying local issues relevant to state elections instead of relying solely on national issues and leaders.

The Congress Working Committee (CWC) convened today amidst the ongoing Winter session of Parliament, which has been largely unproductive due to the Modi Government’s refusal to address three critical national issues. These include recent revelations of corruption involving a business group closely associated with the Prime Minister, continued violence in Manipur, and the PM’s failure to visit the troubled state since May 2023.

The CWC thanked the people of Jharkhand for supporting the JMM, INC, and other INDIA parties, rejecting the BJP’s divisive campaign. CWC appreciated the electorate’s support for the NC-INC alliance in J&K and reaffirmed its commitment to restoring full statehood to J&K. Haryana was a key factor for INC as they were expecting a win over there. CWC addressed the unexpected performance in Haryana, where the party failed to form the government despite expectations. Similarly, the party’s performance in Maharashtra, alongside its MVA allies, was described as shocking and indicative of targeted manipulation.

“We may have lost the elections, but there is no doubt that unemployment, inflation, and economic inequality are burning issues in this country. The caste census is also an important issue today. Issues like constitution, social justice and harmony are issues of the people,” Kharge said on the result of recent elections.“…this does not mean that we forget the important local issues in the electoral states. It is also important to understand the different issues of the states in detail in time and make a solid campaign strategy around it,” he added. The CWC reaffirmed its commitment to the Places of Worship (Special Provisions) Act, 1991, which it claims is being violated by the BJP. The committee discussed the challenges faced by the INC after the four Vidhan Sabha elections. The victory of Priyanka Gandhi Vadra in the Wayanad by-election has boosted enthusiasm among party workers.

The CWC expressed confidence that the Congress President would soon complete detailed state-wise reviews and take necessary follow-up actions, particularly concerning organizational matters. The committee called for unity and discipline within the party, urging members to persevere with renewed determination.

The issues highlighted during the Bharat Jodo Yatra, Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra, and the Lok Sabha election campaign, such as caste census for social justice, removal of the 50% ceiling on reservations, and control of economic monopolies, remain central to the party’s narrative. The CWC emphasized the need to address these daily concerns of the people.

The committee raised concerns about the integrity of the electoral process, citing the partisan functioning of the Election Commission. The committee vowed to address these public concerns through a national movement, reinforcing its commitment to free and fair elections as a Constitutional mandate.

The CWC meet saw Kharge presiding over the session, with several leaders including LoP Rahul Gandhi, alongside AICC general secretaries Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, K C Venugopal and Jairam Ramesh, among others.
