While the world benefitted from India’s COVID vaccines, Congress MP questions the efficacy of COVID vaccines
Even as the COVID vaccine, prepared by Indian pharmaceutical companies, saved lives across the world, Congress questioned its efficacy on Thursday.
The Congress question came after Prime Minister Narendra Modi, during his reply to the motion of thanks to President Draupadi Murmu’s address, said that efforts were made to discredit the country’s scientists, who gave vaccines to a world reeling under the wrath of the unprecedented COVID pandemic.
Speaking to The New Indian, Congress leader Vivek Tankha said, “Nobody will ever insult the scientists of the country because they are entitled to the highest respect. But the fact is nobody knows how effective the vaccines were, and nobody knows what is happening post-COVID or whether the heart attacks are taking place because of vaccines or otherwise.”
The new remarks are expected to cause a massive uproar, as two Indian pharmaceutical companies developed COVID vaccines that have saved the lives of people in over 150 countries.
The COVID vaccines that are manufactured in India are Bharat Biotech’s indigenously developed COVAXIN and Serum Institute of India (SII)’s Covishield.
The Congress leader’s remarks came after Prime Minister Narendra Modi claimed that former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi used the president’s rule 50 times to destabilise the state government.
PM Modi also slammed the Congress, saying that efforts were made to discredit the country’s scientists, who gave vaccines to a world reeling under the wrath of the unprecedented COVID pandemic.
He further said that they (Congress) used to say ‘Gareebi Hatao’ but did nothing for over four decades. “While we work hard to meet the expectations and aspirations of the people of the country,” PM Modi said in the Rajya Sabha.
