Congress Loses Its Presence In UP’s Legislative Council

Deepak Singh was the only member of the Congress party in Uttar Pradesh’s Legislative Council

LUCKNOW: For the first time in the history of independent India, the Congress will have no representation in the Uttar Pradesh’s Legislative Council, the Upper House of the state assembly after its sole MLC Deepak Singh tenure comes to an end today.

Speaking to The New Indian over the phone, Singh, who comes from Amethi, said, “Yes my tenure is coming to an end today.”

The Congress leader, who is considered close to the Gandhi family said, “I believe in history, and history repeats itself.”

Citing the example of the pre-independence era, Singh said, in 1920, when Motilal Nehru resigned, Congress did not have any representative in Vidhan Sabha. “But the Congress fought against the British for our country’s freedom. Today again Congress is not there in the house, today’s government is the same as the British,” Singh said.

Hitting out at the BJP, the Congress leader said, “It (BJP government) carries out atrocities, it (BJP) is looting the nation, only private business firms are of importance. While the British had to leave the country, the BJP government too will leave (the seat of power).”

Congress has been out of power in Uttar Pradesh, politically one of the most vital states, since 1989. The Congress could manage to win only two seats in the 403-member assembly in elections concluded earlier this year, despite Congress general secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra leading the party’s campaign from the front.

Reacting to the current regime of the BJP in the state, the Congress leader said, “They (BJP) completed 100 days in the state and it was well celebrated. But in the last hundred days, only corruption and scams have happened, this is not what the Uttar Pradesh people wanted. And it can be rightly proven by the letter of the Deputy Chief Minister. I have asked for the SIT investigation by the UP Police, let the government prove that it is not a part of this corruption,” Singh added.
