NEW DELHI:  A day after Union Agriculture Minister Narendra Tomar said that the government had taken a step back on the three farm laws and will once again move forward again, the Congress on Saturday hit back saying the falsehood of the government has been exposed as these laws were repealed in view of elections in five states.

Speaking to media here at the party headquarters, Congress spokesperson Randeep Singh Surjewala said, “The Agriculture Minister on Friday in Maharashtra said that they will bring back the three agriculture laws in new form. It is clear that they will bring it back after the assembly elections in five states.”

He alleged that this was being done on the pressure of the industrialist friends.

Reminding the government of the year-long protest by the farmers, during which over 700 farmers had died, Surjewala said, “Prime Minister Narendra Modi had to apologise to the farmers and the three black laws were taken back by the government in the Parliament.”

“The Congress had called it a stunt and the same is coming true. Even Rajasthan Governor Kalraj Mishra had stated that the same laws will be brought back and even BJP MP Sakhshi Maharaj had said that these bills will be brought back,” he added.

Hitting out at the Agriculture Minister, the Congress leader said that as per him the three agriculture laws were very progresive.

“If these laws were so progressive then why did the govt had to repeal it after apologising to farmers,” he asked.

Surjewala also said that the three farm laws were not accepted by a few farmers and third thing that he said that the Modi government had taken a step back but will once again come forward with the agriculture bills.

“Yes, they have to take a step back because of elections and the Congress will not allow the government to bring back the three farm laws. People need to defeat BJP to give them a lesson so that they don’t think of cheating the farmers and they don’t bring back the three black farm laws,” he said.

He also questioned the silence of the Prime MInister over the remarks made by his agriculture minister and asked what kind of conspiracy they are doing.

“It is a conspiracy by the Modi government on the farmers. They are planning to bring back the three farm laws from the back door. Why is the Agriculture Minister calling these laws progressive? Whereas the fact is that these were the regressive laws. Under Rahul Gandhi’s leadership we will fight against the three laws if the government once again tries to bring it back,” Surjewala added.
