NEW DELHI: Harshdeep Kaur, a celebrated name in Bollywood’s music industry, opened up in an exclusive interview with The New Indian’s Executive Editor Rohan Dua about her journey, her iconic turbaned identity, and her collaboration with legendary composers.
Known for her mesmerizing voice in songs like Heer from Jab Tak Hai Jaan and Katiya Karun from Rockstar, Harshdeep proudly embraces her Sikh identity, making her a standout artist in the industry.

“The turban has become a part of my identity,” Harshdeep explained. “When I go on stage or TV shows, it completes my look and persona. But my singing comes from within it’s the result of hard work and blessings from my family and gurus.”
Reflecting on her career, she shared, “I’ve worked with many brilliant composers, but A.R. Rahman remains special. Songs like Ek Onkar and Katiya Karun were life-changing. His ability to experiment with voices and guide singers is unmatched.”

Harshdeep also shared an interesting anecdote about her work with Amit Trivedi on Luv Shuv Tey Chicken Khurana: “Amit used my voice as an instrument. The line I sang was looped to create a unique sound, showcasing his innovative approach to music.”
When asked about her preference for meaningful songs over commercial hits, she said, “I’ve always believed music transcends language and boundaries. While I love folk and Punjabi music, my goal has always been to represent Indian music as a whole.”
Adding to her multifaceted career, Harshdeep recently performed sold-out concerts in Mumbai and Meerut. “The energy of the audience was electrifying,” she said. “Music is my way of connecting with people, and these shows were a testament to how deeply songs resonate across regions.”
Harshdeep concluded with a heartfelt message: “Every song I sing carries a piece of my soul. Whether it’s a Bollywood track or a Punjabi folk song, my aim is to evoke emotions and create timeless memories for listeners.”
