Cochin airport, BPCL to launch world’s first airport green hydrogen plant

NEW DELHI: In a groundbreaking initiative poised to redefine sustainable aviation, Cochin International Airport Ltd (CIAL), known as the world’s premier solar-powered airport, has forged an alliance with Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited (BPCL) to establish a pioneering Green Hydrogen plant within the airport’s premises.

The memorandum of Understanding (MOU) between CIAL and BPCL marks a historic milestone in the realm of green energy innovation, aiming to establish the world’s inaugural Green Hydrogen plant and fueling station within an airport domain. Green hydrogen, derived from renewable sources like water and solar energy, emerges as a pivotal component of zero-carbon energy strategies.

The ceremonial exchange of the agreement took place at the Legislative Complex in Thiruvananthapuram, in the august presence of Kerala Chief Minister and Chairman of CIAL, Pinarayi Vijayan.

Renowned for its trailblazing endeavours in sustainable energy, CIAL has consistently demonstrated its commitment to environmental stewardship through large-scale solar installations and hydroelectric projects. With a cumulative installed capacity of 50 MW generating 200 thousand units of power daily, CIAL stands as a beacon of renewable energy adoption in the aviation sector.

Building upon its legacy of innovation, CIAL has now embarked on a transformative journey with BPCL, signing an MOU for a 1,000 KW pilot project to establish the world’s first Green Hydrogen plant and fueling station at Kochi Airport.

Under the collaborative framework, BPCL will spearhead the technological infrastructure and operational management, while CIAL will provide the requisite land, water, and renewable energy resources. Initial production from the plant will power vehicles within the airport premises.

S. Suhas IAS, Managing Director of CIAL, lauded the partnership as a pioneering stride towards sustainable aviation, affirming CIAL’s commitment to ushering in a zero-carbon future for the aviation sector.

G. Krishnakumar, Chairman & Managing Director of BPCL, hailed the collaboration as a pivotal moment in the pursuit of sustainable energy solutions. Emphasising BPCL’s dedication to India’s energy sovereignty, he cited the indigenous electrolyser showcased at India Energy Week 2024 as a testament to BPCL’s commitment to fostering innovation and driving meaningful change.
