NEW DELHI: Chief Minister of Himachal Pradesh Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu inaugurated a two-day ‘Maitree’ programme of Himachal Pradesh University (HPU) Alumni (Decadal Chapter of 90s) on June 15. The event also marked the inauguration of the International Chapter of ‘Maitree’.
The Chief Minister recalled his old days in the University which helped him build the edifice of his political career.

During his address, Chief Minister Sukhu assured attendees that the state government is actively exploring the possibility of conducting Students Central Association (SCA) elections at HPU. Discussions are underway with university authorities regarding this initiative.
The direct elections to the SCA in HPU and its affiliated colleges were discontinued in the wake of a spurt in violent incidents in the year 2014. Student organisations have been for long demanding the lifting of the ban on SCA elections.
Emphasizing the government’s commitment to enhancing educational standards across all government-run institutions, Sukhu highlighted recent initiatives such as introducing English medium education from class one in government schools and the establishment of Rajiv Gandhi Day Boarding Schools across all 68 assembly constituencies.
He said that the Government mulls to bring innovative changes in the higher education sector based on modern teaching technologies so that every student could derive maximum benefit out of it. He also urged the students to be noble and responsible citizens of the country and always be good to others.
Sukhu said that the government hass set a target to make Himachal Pradesh the most prosperous state by the year 2032. He detailed about Schemes like ‘Mukhya Mantri Sukh Aashray’ in which 4000 orphan children have been adopted as ‘Children of the State’ and the entire responsibility of their education has been taken by the State Government and construction of a Center of Excellence in Tikri of Kandaghat area in District Solan to provide education to about 300 Divyangjans. He also announced to provide Rs 2 crore to the alumni Association for construction of their building.
