CM Bhagwant Mann felicitates Punjab’s hockey heroes with Rs 1 crore prize

Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann honored eight members of the Indian hockey team, hailing from Punjab, with a cash prize of Rs 1 crore each.

NEW DELHI: Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann honored eight members of the Indian hockey team, hailing from Punjab, with a cash prize of Rs 1 crore each for their outstanding performance in winning a bronze medal at the Paris Olympics.

In a heartfelt ceremony, the CM praised these players for making the entire country proud and emphasised that Indian hockey is on the path of revival.

During his speech, Mann lauded the players for their spectacular display on the field, particularly their historic victory over Australia after 52 years. He highlighted the leadership of captain Harmanpreet Singh, who scored 10 goals during the tournament and steered the team to a remarkable win. 

Mann also announced that these players would serve as brand ambassadors in Punjab’s war against drugs, leveraging their status as role models to inspire the state’s youth.

In a unique turn, the CM took on a new role by interviewing the players about their experiences during the tournament.

Captain Harmanpreet and Mandeep Singh expressed gratitude for the government’s support and affirmed their commitment to bringing home a gold medal in future Olympics.

The CM underscored the state’s commitment to promoting sports, including plans for a hockey league tournament in November and the launch of the Kheda Watan Punjab Dian sports event on August 28.

He also discussed the development of sports clusters across Punjab, tailored to specific games like football, boxing, and athletics.

Mann concluded by promising continued support to athletes, including job promotions and further rewards, while reiterating that the nation owes a debt of gratitude to these players for restoring the glory of Indian hockey.
