Close aide of slain terrorist Burhan Wani gets 15-year imprisonment

Amir Nabi Wagay was considered close to former Hizbul commander late Burhan Wani

Amir Nabi Wagay, a close aide of the late terrorist Burhan Wani, was sentenced to 15 years in prison by a UAPA court in Srinagar.

Amir Nabi Wagay of Anantnag District was sentenced to six years imprisonment under Section 20 of the UAPA for being an active member of Hizbul Mujahideen, a banned terrorist outfit.

The court also handed him another six years under Section 7/25 Indian Arms Act for possession of illegally acquired firearms and ammunition.

The court also handed him 3 years under Section 13 UAPA for indulging in unlawful activities, especially promoting separatism and disrupting the sovereignty and territorial integrity of India.

Amir Wagay, also known by his code name Abu Qasim, was the District Commander of Hizbul Mujahideen in the Anantnag area.

Wagay was nabbed by a team of CI Kashmir of the J-K police, now mostly operating under the SIA banner, on March 31, 2017.

The CI team apprehended him in SKIMS Soura while Amir Wagay was on a mission to carry out a terror attack.

The investigation and trial records show that, on realising that plainclothes policemen had nearly surrounded him after trailing, Wagay tried to break the encirclement by attempting to fire at the policemen. However, he was overpowered.

After a trial of over 3 and ½ years, the court found Wagay guilty of several charges under UAPA and Arms Act.
