Clashes During Hanuman Jayanti Rally In Delhi’s Jahangirpuri, 2 Cops Injured

NEW DELHI: Violence broke out allegedly after stone-pelting on a Hanuman Jayanti procession in Jahangirpuri area of Delhi on Saturday evening. Several people including two policemen were injured in the ensuing chaos.

Visuals from the spot show two groups of people pelting stones at each other.

Two companies of the Rapid Action Force (RAF) were deployed in and around Jahangirpuri, senior police official said, adding that police teams have started patrolling.

Delhi Police Commissioner Rakesh Asthana said that the situation is now under control. “Additional force has been deployed in and around the area. Force deployments have also been done in sensitive areas across the national capital,” he said.

The police chief confirmed injuries to two policemen and assured strict action against the accused.

Special Commissioner of Police (Law and Order) Dependra Pathak said the police were holding talks with peace committees to bring down the tension prevailing in the area. “We appeal to everyone to maintain peace,” he said.

Meanwhile, Union Home Minister Amit Shah the Delhi Police Commissioner and directed him to take necessary action.

Appealing for peace, Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal said, “Central government has the responsibility to maintain peace in the national capital.”

According to senior police officials, deputy commissioners of police of other districts have also put on high alert.

Lieutenant Governor Anil Baijal has condemned the violence and called the clashes as “unfortunate”. He took stock of the situation with the police commissioner and assured that the culprits will not be spared.
