NEW DELHI: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) responded to AAP’s accusations of planning to detain Arvind Kejriwal to disrupt his Lok Sabha election campaigning. In retaliation, BJP officials labelled the Delhi Chief Minister’s actions as reminiscent of a fugitive.

Speaking about Kejriwal’s absence from ED summons, Delhi BJP Chief Virendra Sachdeva dubbed AAP as a ‘choron ki baraat’ (a procession of thieves).

“Since morning, I have been seeing the ‘choron ki baraat’ (thieves’ procession) creating a ruckus and lamenting for Kejriwal. Didn’t you remember this while practicing corruption? You (Kejriwal) are evading the investigation agency. The ED has summoned you thrice, but you haven’t complied. Now, you’re lamenting the possibility of arrest. Delhi CM, it is your duty to adhere to the rules, but you are not doing so,” expressed Sachdeva.

BJP leader Bansuri Swaraj also asserted that Kejriwal isn’t above the law. “The ED has sent three summons, but the CM is running away from an investigation. He doesn’t want to be involved in the investigation,” Swaraj affirmed.

Delhi Minister Atishi claimed on X (formerly Twitter) that Kejriwal might face arrest on Thursday due to an impending ED raid. AAP’s Jasmine Shah accused BJP of targeting AAP and Kejriwal, suggesting their intent to cripple the party before the Lok Sabha elections.

Congress leader Udit Raj urged Kejriwal to confront the ED’s allegations similar to Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi’s approach.

BJP MP Ramesh Bidhuri questioned the conduct of those repeatedly evading police summons, pondering if they should be exempt from arrest, emphasising equal treatment under the law.

Kejriwal, for the third time, skipped ED summons, citing prior commitments involving Rajya Sabha elections and Republic Day. He urged the ED to address his previous correspondences, denouncing their persistent non-disclosure and non-response as an overreach beyond the law.

“As a premier investigating agency the non-disclosure and non-response approach adopted by you cannot sustain the test of law, equity, or justice. Your obstinacy is tantamount to assuming the role of judge, jury, and executioner at the same time which is not acceptable in our country governed by the rule of law,” he wrote in the letter on Wednesday.

The Delhi CM previously avoided ED summons citing election campaigns and a Vipassana trip in November and December.
