In the 2002 assembly election, which was the first after Uttarakhand’s bifurcation from Uttar Pradesh in the year 2000, Congress’ Hemesh Kharakwal won by 395 votes defeating BJP’s Madan Maharana from the Champawat seat.

In the 2007 elections, BJP’s Bina Maharana won by 7058 votes against Congress’s Hemesh Kharakwal from the constituency.
