Champawat By-Polls: Can CM Dhami Seal The Deal?

DEHRADUN: The results will be declared on Friday, June 3, but Bharatiya Janata Party candidate and Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami is claiming victory as voters in Champawat sealed the fate of their representative in the by-elections on Tuesday.

The voting started at 7 in the morning and continued till 5 in the evening with approximately 64% of the voters exercising their rights.

CM Dhami visited a few polling booths to thank the voters and encourage them to vote.

“I am thankful to the people. This election is not between parties but for development. In Champawat, it is not about the party anymore. I have the support of people and we are going to win by record margins,” CM Dhami said.

Of the total 96,213 voters in the constituency, 50,171 are male and 46,042 are female.

BJP is leaving no stone unturned to see CM Dhami wins the election. It has roped in 40 ‘star campaigners’ including Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, union ministers Anurag Thakur, Ajay Bhatt, BJP MP Tejasvi Surya, party’s national general secretary, Rajya Sabha MP Dushyant Gautam, former union minister Smriti Irani and four former state CMs – Ramesh Pokhriyal Nishank, Vijay Bahuguna, Trivendra Singh Rawat, Tirath Singh Rawat – to canvass for Dhami.

UP CM Yogi Adityanath conducted a roadshow and a public rally in support of CM Dhami on May 28.

Interestingly, no sitting CM has been able to win the assembly elections but all incumbent CMs have won the by-elections.

Former CM Vijay Bahuguna recorded the biggest win when he won by a margin of 39,900 from the Sitarganj seat in the year 2012.

Former CM ND Tiwari contested by-elections from Ramnagar seat in the year 2002 and won by 4915 votes while Harish Rawat contested from Dharchula seat in the year 2014 and won by more than 19000 votes. In 2007, BC Khanduri won from Dhumakot seat.

In the 2002 assembly election, which was the first after Uttarakhand’s bifurcation from Uttar Pradesh in the year 2000, Congress’ Hemesh Kharakwal won by 395 votes defeating BJP’s Madan Maharana from the Champawat seat.

In the 2007 elections, BJP’s Bina Maharana won by 7058 votes against Congress’s Hemesh Kharakwal from the constituency.

In 2017, Kailash Chandra Gahtori won by a margin of 17,360 votes repeating his electoral success yet again in 2022 polls with 5304 votes.
