NEW DELHI: Rohit Sharma, who captained Team India for the T20 World Cup 2024, accepted the trophy with a robot dance move, while other team members followed with the same level of ecstasy.

When BCCI Secretary Jay Shah presented the T20 World Cup 2024 trophy to captain Rohit, he recreated Argentina legend Lionel Messi’s iconic celebration dance from the FIFA World Cup 2022 title win. Rohit walked towards the trophy in the same manner as Messi and then gave the silverware a joyful smack. It seemed that wrist spinner Kuldeep Yadav had suggested to Rohit Sharma to make the appearance in this manner earlier when the Indian players were collecting their winners’ medals. Rohit seemed to have taken Kuldeep’s advice seriously, and it resulted in an iconic moment.

In the thrilling match on June 29, where South Africa needed 30 runs from 30 balls, Indian bowlers and fielders showed their magic. Under the captaincy of Rahul Dravid, India finally won by 7 runs at Kensington Oval in Barbados.

Rohit couldn’t contain his happiness; he also kissed Hardik Pandya post-match during the interview for his significant contribution to the match. Pandya took three important wickets from Heinrich Klaasen, Kagiso Rabada, and David Miller, followed by an impressive catch by Suryakumar Yadav. India had set a target of 177, the highest ever in a T20 World Cup final, after Virat Kohli’s 76-run knock. Bowlers Jasprit Bumrah and Arshdeep Singh also helped Team India by taking two wickets each to choke South Africa at 169 to secure a famous win.

Team India won the T20 World Cup for the second time after 11 years. Before this, in 2007, India won under the captaincy of Mahendra Singh Dhoni, defeating Pakistan by 5 runs in Johannesburg, South Africa.

At the post-match presentation ceremony, former India captain Virat Kohli announced his retirement from T20Is. The match was followed by a press conference where current captain Rohit Sharma also announced his retirement.
