After a brief lull during the Durga puja celebration in Bengal, the buzz around the cattle smuggling case, which has become a flashpoint between the BJP and the Mamata Banerjee government, has picked up pace.

In a fresh development, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has issued a notice to officials of a company linked to TMC strongman Anubrata Mandal’s daughter Sukanya.

Sukanya and Vidyuvaran Gayen, one of the close associates of Anubrata, are said to be directors of ANM Agrochem Food Private Limited.

The company has been asked by the CBI to submit an income and expenditure report by early next week.

As per sources in the CBI, officials of ANM Agrochem Food Pvt. Ltd. have been summoned to appear before the Central agency as witnesses in the cattle smuggling case.

A CBI team reached Santiniketan on Tuesday. The investigation is going on from the temporary camp there.

As per the sources, the CBI during the course of its investigation has found that several properties were purchased by some accused through the company.

In addition, the company also finds mention in the charge sheet filed against Anubrata.

On Tuesday, a team of CBI officers reached Santiniketan in Birbhum district and set up a temporary camp, indicating that the agency could intensify its probe into the case in the days to come.

Earlier in August this year, the CBI arrested Anubrata in a dramatic fashion from his residence in Birbhum district and carried out searches at a number of rice mills linked to the TMC strongman.

The agency is investigating to ascertain how the properties of Anubrata increased multifold in the last few years.

The case pertains to the smuggling of cattle to neighbouring Bangladesh through the porous international border stretching into 2,216 km in West Bengal.

As the FIR in the case, BSF officer Satish Kumar, who was posted as the commandant of the 36 battalion in Malda between 2015 and 2017, was also allegedly involved in the smuggling which is suspected to be run by some high-profile politicians in connivance with government officials.
