Bus crash on Jammu-Poonch highway: 21 dead, 60 injured

JAMMU: At least 21 people perished and over 60 were injured after a bus plunged into a deep gorge at Tanda Morh on the Jammu-Poonch Highway in the Akhnoor area. Following the incident, a rescue operation was promptly initiated, an official reported. The bus was traveling from Hathras, Uttar Pradesh. The injured have been transported to Akhnoor Hospital.

“A bus carrying passengers from Hathras, Uttar Pradesh, met with an accident near Tanda, Akhnoor in Jammu,” stated the Deputy Commissioner of Jammu.

This tragedy occurred just hours after the Sampark Kranti Express engine derailed at Jammu railway station on Thursday. Fortunately, no injuries were reported. As the train arrived from New Delhi, one wheel of the engine derailed, causing the train to stop, officials said.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed deep sorrow over the loss of lives in the Akhnoor bus accident. He announced Rs 2 lakh for the next of kin of each deceased.

President Droupadi Murmu extended her heartfelt condolences to the families of the victims. On X, she wrote, “Pained beyond words to learn about the loss of lives in a bus accident in Akhnoor near Jammu. My deepest condolences to the bereaved families. I wish a speedy recovery for the injured.”

The Lieutenant Governor of Jammu and Kashmir also expressed condolences on his official account. Calling the accident “heart-rending,” he stated, “I mourn the loss of lives and pray to the almighty to give the bereaved families the strength to bear the irreparable loss. Praying for the speedy recovery of the injured.”
