NEW DELHI: Invoking the ideals of Lord Buddha in context to the geopolitical instability and violence across the world, Union law & justice minister Kiren Rijiju said, “Buddhist way is the only way and universal path, irrespective of religious groups.”

The Member of Parliament from Arunachal Pradesh was speaking during the celebration of Buddha Purnima, organised by the Ministry of Culture and International Buddhist Confederation. Union minister for culture and tourism G Kishen Reddy, Union minister of state for culture Arjun Ram Meghwal and Union minister of state for culture and external affairs Meenakshi Lekhi also attended the celebration.

Kiren Rijiju said what Buddha said 2,500 years ago is relevant today at the time of conflict.

“India and the world are linked to Buddhism and Buddha. Many foreigners whom I have met said that they have to come to the Land of Buddha,” Kiren Rijiju added.

Speaking at the occasion on Indian Buddhist heritage, Union Minister Lekhi said, “Indian heritage must not just be celebrated but also be promoted globally. PM Modi in Lumbini is working on the heritage of India.”

“India allocated funds for several Buddhist heritage sites spread across different parts of the country including Amravati, Kushinagar, Rajkot and Satna,” Union Minister Reddy said.

Reddy also highlighted that about 16 antiquities and artefacts that were brought back to India from foreign lands are related to Buddhism.

Highlighting that Buddhist sites attract tourists from the country as well as from across the world, Reddy said, “Minister of Tourism is working on capacity building.” He also said that between 2018-20 about 125 people were trained for linguistic tourism, in a bid to help the tourists from other countries understand the local cultures better.
