It was a match made in protests – and solemnised at the registrar of marriage – as Bollywood actress Swara Bhasker, more famous for her left-leaning anti-government stance, got married to the political activist Fahad Ahmad.

Ahmad is the Maharashtra state president of the Samajwadi Yuvjan Sabha, the Samajwadi Party’s youth wing.

Bhasker took to Twitter to announce the news on Thursday, February 16. But soon after the announcement, Bhasker found herself in a tight spot as some eagle-eyed Twitterati quickly pointed out a quirky tweet that she posted on February 2.

In the tweet, Bhasker jokingly addressed Fahad as ‘bhai (brother)’, ‘miyan (husband)’ and ‘dost (friend)’.

“Happy Birthday Fahad Mian! May the brother’s confidence remain intact. Be happy, be prosperous. You are getting older, get married now! Have a great birthday & a fantastic year friend!” she tweeted.

It soon led to a meme fest online with Twitterati leaving no stone unturned to target the outspoken actress.

“Many many congratulations ‘brother’ on your wedding.” “Bhai?” questioned another one. One more also added, “Bhai se hi shaadi krli tumne (Did you just marry your brother)?” a user commented.

Meanwhile, Bhasker, who met Ahmad during a rally in New Delhi in 2020, informed that their wedding was filed with the court on January 6 under the special marriage act.

“Sometimes you search far & wide for something that was right next to you all along. We were looking for love, but we found friendship first. And then we found each other! Welcome to my heart Fahad Ahmed. It’s chaotic, but it’s yours!” Bhasker tweeted.

In response, Ahmad tweeted, “I never knew chaos can be so beautiful. Thank you for holding my hand love.”

In a tweet posted on February 2, 2023, Bhasker asked Ahmed to get married on his birthday. “Happy Birthday Fahad Mian! May the brother’s confidence remain intact. Be happy, be prosperous. You are getting older, get married now! Have a great birthday & a fantastic year friend!” she tweeted.

Before joining SP in 2022, Ahmad was the general secretary of Tata Institute of Social Sciences. The 31-year-old also holds a bachelor’s degree from Aligarh Muslim University.

Bhasker was earlier in a relationship with writer Himanshu Sharma. They met during the shooting of Raanjhanaa. However, they parted ways in 2019.

Bhasker won accolades for movies like Nil Battey Sannata, Tanu Weds Manu, Raanjhanaa, Veere Di Wedding and Anarkali of Aarah. She was last seen in Jahan Chaar Yaar, a film about friendship.

While there is no doubt about Bhasker’s acting skills, it was her controversial stands and remarks on various socio-political issues that hogged the headlines for all the wrong reasons.

Bhasker has been a vocal critic of the centre’s Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) and has attended protests against it. In a recent interview, she said that ‘speaking up’ for people and values has cost her severely in her career and that she sometimes struggles even to pay her EMIs on time.

Following the interview, Bhasker was seen participating in former Congress president Rahul Gandhi’s Bharat Jodo Yatra.
