NEW DELHI: On the occasion of India’s 77th Independence Day, British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak participated in a spiritually enriching Ram Katha recitation led by Morari Bapu at the historic Cambridge University.
Sunak, of Indian origin and Britain’s first Indian-origin Prime Minister, joined the event with a heartfelt invocation, “Jai Siya Ram”, emphasizing his identity as a Hindu before his political role.
In his address, Sunak acknowledged the honor of serving as Prime Minister and the challenges that come with it. He shared that his faith provides the guidance, courage, strength, and resilience needed to make difficult decisions for the country’s betterment. “Our faith gives me courage, strength, and resilience to do the best I can for our country,” Sunak affirmed.

The event took place at Jesus College and marked Morari Bapu’s 921st recital, titled ‘Manas Vishwavidyalaya.’ Sunak addressed a diverse audience of various age groups, highlighting his pride in his dual heritage – Indian and British. Morari Bapu presented Sunak with a revered Lord Shivalinga from Somnath temple, symbolizing a spiritual connection.
Sunak shared a personal anecdote about his historic role as the first British Indian Chancellor, recounting how he lit Diwali diyas outside No. 11 Downing Street in 2020. He connected the backdrop of the Ram Katha’s setting, a golden image of Lord Hanuman, to his office’s golden Ganesha, both symbols of positivity and guidance in his political journey.

Reflecting on his admiration for Lord Rama, Sunak stated, “For me, Lord Rama will always be an inspirational figure, to face life’s challenges with courage, to govern with humility and selflessness.” He emphasized the significance of teachings from the Ramayana, Bhagavad Gita, and Hanuman Chalisa in his decision-making process, underscoring the importance of contemplation before action.
The event culminated in Sunak’s participation in an Aarti ceremony alongside the spiritual leader, Morari Bapu. The British Prime Minister’s presence at the Ram Katha on India’s Independence Day underscored the enduring ties between cultures and his commitment to embracing his heritage while serving as a leader on the global stage.
