MUMBAI/AMSTERDAM: Action-packed Hindi sports drama, based on the life of an Indian footballer Syed Abdul Rahim who served as coach between 1952 and 1962, on Tuesday added another feather in its cap for being awarded as the Best Asian film at a gala awards event in Netherlands.

Hindi film Maidaan, that starred Ajay Devgn in a football biopic, wins a prestigous award in Amsterdam.

The glittering Septimius Awards in Amsterdam, renowned for honoring the very best in global cinema announced its 2024 winners that featured Maidaan among other films.

Held at the iconic Tuschinski Theater on August 20, the Septimius Awards are seen as a celebration of cinematic excellence on a grand scale.

Often referred to as the “Oscars of Europe,” this event is a magnet for the industry’s elite, where the world’s top filmmakers and actors come together to honor creativity and innovation.

This year, the ceremony was graced by a stellar lineup of BAFTA, Emmy, and Oscar winners, including the likes of Jenny Beavan, David Parfitt, Kevin Willmott, and Sir Christopher Hampton.

“It’s indeed a proud moment for us,” said producer Boney Kapoor after the award.

Released in April this year, the film had made headlines when it begged a question on India’s last known international performance in Asian Games in 1962 — the event on which the movie’s nail-biting action is based on amid international posturings on geopolitics.

Maidaan’s coveted award not only highlights the film’s artistic brilliance but also underscores its significance on the global cinematic stage, marking a new milestone in international cinema.
