NEW DELHI: The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has resumed its demolition drive at Mumbaiโs Habitat Studio in Khar, targeting unauthorized constructions for the second consecutive day. The action follows a controversy involving stand-up comedian Kunal Kamra, who allegedly made remarks targeting Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde in a video reportedly filmed at the venue.
Crackdown on Illegal Construction
BMC officials stated that the studio violated multiple building norms, including an illegal makeshift shed on the terrace, which was demolished on Monday. Additionally, the basementโdesignated for storageโwas being used as a studio, flouting civic regulations.
Vinayak Vispute, Assistant Commissioner of H Ward, confirmed that no prior notice was issued as the violations pertained to temporary structures. However, further action regarding the basementโs misuse will be decided after reviewing the building plans.
Political Backlash and Protests
The BMCโs action came shortly after State Transport Minister Pratap Sarnaik urged BMC Commissioner Bhushan Gagrani to inspect the studio for illegal constructions. The move also followed a protest by Shiv Sena workers, led by social media head Rahool Kanal, who stormed the studio on Sunday, alleging illegal operations and lack of fire safety clearances.
Kanal claimed the studioโs owner failed to provide satisfactory answers regarding the violations. Meanwhile, police deployment has been increased at the site to prevent further unrest.
The incident highlights the ongoing tensions between political groups and entertainment venues, with civic authorities taking swift action amid allegations of illegal constructions. Further updates on BMCโs next steps are expected soon.
