SRINAGAR: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Monday announced its first list of 44 candidates for the forthcoming elections in Jammu and Kashmir. Out of the 82 names in the initial list, Arshid Bhat has been chosen for Rajpora, Javed Ahmad Qadri for Shopian, and Mohd. Rafiq Wani for Anantnag West. Advocate Syed Wazahat will contest from Anantnag, Sushri Shagun Parihar from Kishtwar, and Gajay Singh Rana from Doda.

The candidate list was unveiled this morning following the BJP’s Central Election Committee’s finalization of selections for the upcoming election. Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Home Minister Amit Shah, and BJP President JP Nadda attended the key meeting in Delhi yesterday.

Speaking to The New Indian, State Media Co-Convenor of the BJP Media Cell and Media Incharge Kashmir, Sajid Yousuf, stated, “The BJP has issued its candidate list based on local public input. These candidates reflect the choice of the local populace, and we are confident they will succeed in the 2024 Assembly elections.”

He added, “The BJP leadership and workers are already active on the ground, and in the coming days, star campaigners will join these candidates in election rallies. I am confident that the people of Jammu and Kashmir will support these candidates, as the BJP is the only party that has brought peace, progress, and development to the region.”

The J&K Assembly elections will occur in three phases, set for September 18, 25, and October 1. The deadline for filing nominations for the first phase is August 27.

The last Assembly elections in J&K took place in 2014, but the government dissolved after the BJP withdrew support from former Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti’s Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in 2018.
