NEW DELHI: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) Parliamentary Board, the party’s highest decision-making body, will meet on Saturday evening in Delhi to decide the candidate for the vice-presidential election.
The last day to file nomination for the vice-presidential poll is July 19.
The meeting will be attended by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Home Minister Amit Shah, BJP President JP Nadda, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, National General Secretary (Organisation) BL Santhosh, Union Minister Nitin Gadkari and Madhya Pradesh CM Shivraj Singh Chauhan.
Members of Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha vote to elect the vice-president. Of the current strength of 780, the BJP has 394 members, three MPs more than the required number to win the poll.
Sources in the party said that the vice-presidential pick will reflect the often-repeated message of the prime minister: Sabka Saath, Sabka Vikas, Sabka Vishwas, Sabka Prayas.
In the party’s national executive in Hyderabad earlier this month, PM Modi emphasised the need to reach out to “deprived and downtrodden” sections in all communities.
The party has picked a prominent tribal face, Droupadi Murmu, as its presidential candidate. With its electoral strength and backing from non-NDA parties, the BJP is confident that Murmu will easily sail through the majority mark.
It has especially instructed the party units in tribal dominated belts to celebrate the victory of Droupadi Murmu.
