SRINAGAR: The newly elected members of Jammu and Kashmir’s Assembly took their oaths on Monday, marking a pivotal moment for the region’s political scenario. The swearing-in ceremony was conducted under the supervision of Protem Speaker Mubarak Gul.

The event took an unexpected turn when Shagun Parihar, the youngest legislator from Kishtwar representing the BJP, took her oath in Sanskrit. Parihar’s family has faced devastating tragedies. In 2018, her father, Ajit Parihar, and her uncle, Anil Parihar, were killed in a terrorist attack. At the time, Anil Parihar was serving as the BJP’s state secretary. Despite these personal losses, Shagun pursued her education and was working toward her PhD when her candidacy was announced.

She declared assets valued at Rs 92.40 lakh in her election affidavit. Earlier, Prime Minister Narendra Modi referred to her as “beti” during a rally in Doda, underlining her rising importance within the party.
