NEW DELHI: The Bharatiya Janata Party Wednesday demanded a CBI inquiry into illegal mining in Rajasthan and the death of Seer Vijay Das who had self-immolated on July 20 in protest against illegal mining in the state.

Seer Vijay Das had set himself on fire on July 20 and passed away in a Delhi hospital on July 23.

The four-member committee formed by the BJP on July 24 visited Bharatpur and submitted the report to Union home minister Amit Shah and BJP president JP Nadda on Wednesday.

Attacking Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot for allowing illegal mining in the state, BJP national general secretary Arun Singh said, “The illegal mining is so rampant that some of the mountains have been flattened. And it is all happening with the active participation of the Gehlot administration.”

Singh said that people are deeply anguished at the demise of seer Vijay Das and it’s not a good sign for the Gehlot government as wherever seers are disrespected, the government falls.

Seer Vijay Das and others were protesting for 551 days against illegal mining in the hills of Aadi Badri and Kankachal in Bharatpur. The Rajasthan government led by Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot did give oral assurances but took no action against the miners.

Singh said that both Aadi Badri and Kankachal come under 84 Kosi Parikrama and are the centre of faith for millions.

“When there was a BJP government in the state in 2008, it suspended 208 mining blocks. It has come to our knowledge that Rajasthan Minister Zahida Khan also has two mining blocks in Bharatpur,” Singh said. He accused the Congress government of practising politics of appeasement.

Earlier Union Jal Shakti Minister Gajendra Singh Shekhawat had demanded a CBI inquiry into the death of seer Vijay Das. He had accused the Gehlot government of inciting seer Vijay Das to take his own life.
