BJP a ‘Khatra Party’; Will ensure its defeat in the country: Mamata

Lucknow: West Bengal Chief Minister and Trinamool Congress chief Mamata Banerjee once again came forward in support of former Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister and Samajwadi Party (SP) supremo Akhilesh Yadav and targeted the BJP by describing it as a “danger” to the country.

Addressing a joint press conference here with Akhilesh, Banerjee did not mince words to target the BJP and said that they had come to West Bengal during the assembly elections to defeat her party but faced a big defeat.

The Trinamool Congress leader said, “To save the country, we need to defeat the BJP. As most of the Prime Ministers have come from Uttar Pradesh after independence, it is important to defeat BJP here.”

“If BJP is defeated here then we will ensure that it is defeated in rest of the country,” she said appealing the voters to not waste their votes on BJP.

Targeting Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath here, Banerjee said, “During the second wave of Covid, they came to campaign in West Bengal to defeat me. They left their people dying here; left the dead bodies floating in river Ganga. However, we got the cremation of those bodies with respect. Was there no wood to cremate those bodies?”

She further said that the BJP owes an apology to its people, as its chief minister was busy campaigning in West Bengal instead of saving people in his own state.

She described the BJP’s manifesto as ‘money festo’ and lashed out: “What have they done for the daughters of Hathras, Unnao. They need to apologise to people and then seek votes.”

Lamenting at the lack of accountability with regard to PM Cares fund, the Trinamool Congress supremo said, “They say we are providing free vaccination. But the fact remains that it is with the tax payers money. Most people of UP pay their taxes and this is the tax payers money. Yet they don’t give clear account of PM Cares fund as the money has been taken from common people, PSUs.”

She termed BJP as ‘khatra party’ (danger party) and urged people to beware of it.

Raking up the Lakhimpur Kheri violence case, the Trinamool Congress leader asked the BJP to seek forgiveness over the incident in which a Union minister’s son is accused of running over the SUV on protesting farmers.

Banerjee had first campaigned for Samajwadi Party in 2017 assembly polls. At that time, Samajwadi Party was contesting in alliance with the Congress in the state.

After a thumping victory in West Bengal, the Trinamool Congress is expanding in states like Goa and other northeastern states.

However, this time the Trinamool Congress has poached several of its leaders ahead of crucial assembly elections in Goa, Uttar Pradesh and other states. Congress leaders like Abhijit Mukhejee, son of former President Pranab Mukherjee, Sushmita Dev, former Goa CM L Faleiro and others in Megahalaya including former Chief Minister.

Samajwadi Party is eyeing a comeback in the political vital state where it is contesting in alliance with Jayant Chaudhary led RLD and other small parties. The ruling BJP is eyeing a second consecutive term in the state. Meanwhile the Congress and the Mayawati-led BSP is also looking to improve its tally in the state.

Polling in Uttar Pradesh is scheduled in seven phases from February 10 to March 7 and cpunting of votes will take place on March 10.
