BIS sanctions 82 R&D projects to enhance standardisation

Faculty members from prestigious technical institutes, including IITs and NITs, will lead these projects, each with a budget of up to Rs 10 lakh and a six-month completion timeline.

NEW DELHI: The Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) has approved 82 new Research & Development (R&D) projects aimed at advancing the standardisation process in India. Faculty members from prestigious technical institutes, including IITs and NITs, will lead these projects, each with a budget of up to Rs 10 lakh and a six-month completion timeline.

The projects cover critical areas such as Artificial Intelligence, Blockchain Technology, Medical Devices, Renewable Energy, Sustainability, Smart Cities, and Digital Transformation.

BIS Director General Pramod Kumar Tiwari emphasized the significance of these initiatives, stating, “Our collaboration with premier educational institutions and the sanctioning of numerous R&D projects signify our commitment to advancing the standardisation process in line with technological advancements and evolving industry needs.”

The projects are not limited to theoretical research but include extensive field-level studies, addressing emerging challenges and aligning standards with technological advancements. This strategic initiative reflects BIS’s commitment to ensuring that Indian standards are robust, relevant, and capable of addressing modern technology and industry practices.In addition to the 82 sanctioned projects, BIS is in the process of allotting 99 more, with an additional 66 projects available for application. These opportunities are accessible through the BIS website, providing a platform for further innovation and research in standardisation.

BIS, as the National Standards Body of India, has developed over 22,000 Indian Standards to date, ensuring the quality and safety of various goods and services. Recognizing the need for continuous R&D in the standardisation process, BIS has formed Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) with educational institutions to leverage their expertise and promote necessary research for standard formulation.

Through these enhanced R&D efforts, BIS aims to safeguard consumer interests and contribute to developing a safer, more reliable marketplace in India.

This comprehensive approach to standardisation is critical in addressing the challenges posed by rapid technological advancements and the complexities in the manufacturing and service sectors.
