Biplab Deb Mocks CPI(M) Leadership, Bats for ‘One Nation, One Election’

Summary

Former Tripura CM Biplab Deb mocked CPI(M)’s new general secretary M A Baby, claiming he had to Google him. He also backed the ‘One Nation, One Election’ push, blaming Congress-era misuse of Article 356 for disrupting the original election cycle.

New Delhi: Former Tripura Chief Minister Biplab Kumar Deb on Monday took a swipe at the CPI(M)’s choice of M A Baby as its new general secretary, saying he doesn’t personally know the leader and would need to Google him. Speaking at a government event in Agartala, Deb remarked that the CPI(M) no longer has nationally recognised leaders like the BJP does, citing figures such as Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Amit Shah, and Yogi Adityanath as examples.
Deb acknowledged that M A Baby might be a dedicated and capable figure within the party ranks, but claimed his elevation hasn’t struck a chord with the larger public. “Even as a former CM and now an MP, I’ve never heard of him,” he said.
Highlighting the broader leadership crisis in opposition parties, Deb added, “The Congress is still stuck with a family, while the Left lacks any leader with national appeal.”
The BJP leader also reiterated his support for the proposed ‘One Nation, One Election’ system. He argued that holding simultaneous Lok Sabha and Assembly elections would help conserve resources and streamline governance. According to Deb, this practice was originally followed post-Independence but was disrupted due to Congress-era misuse of Article 356, which led to the untimely dissolution of several state governments.
Deb insisted the current push by the NDA government is not a new initiative but rather an effort to restore an older, more efficient system of democratic functioning.
