Biopic of first female IPS officer in progress

NEW DELHI: India’s first female IPS officer, Kiran Bedi, has confirmed her biopic titled ‘Bedi: The Name You Know, The Story You Don’t’. The biopic is expected to be released next year, coinciding with the 50th anniversary of International Women’s Year.

The film is directed by Kushal Chawla and produced by Gaurav Chawla. The film project was announced through a video release on Tuesday, June 11. Kiran stated to the media that she had been approached several times in the past to create a film about her life, but she believes that now is the opportune moment.

Bedi has given her approval for the production of a biopic after reviewing the four and a half years of research conducted by director Kushal Chawla. She mentioned being in Pondicherry for her duties when Kushal and his father, Gaurav Chawla, expressed their desire to create a film about her.

Kiran initially felt it might be premature, considering she is still actively working. However, Kushal and Gaurav had already put in considerable effort, unaware of whether she would consent or not.

Announced by Dream Slate Pictures in Delhi, this film aims to chronicle the life and career of a woman who has broken countless barriers and inspired many.

Bedi, who once held the title of India’s national junior tennis champion, made history when she joined the Indian Police Service in 1972. Her storied career includes serving as the Lieutenant Governor of Puducherry from 2016 to 2021.

Written and directed by Kushaal Chawla, the film promises to shed light on both her professional achievements and the personal challenges she faced along the way.

The film is set to enter pre-production soon. However, the casting for Bedi’s role has not yet been decided. When asked about which actress would portray her character better, she replied, “It is difficult to say; it would be best to leave it to the directors and producers.”
