Biofuels to remain key driver for Atmanirbhar Bharat

Union Minister of Consumer Affairs, Food, and Public Distribution, Pralhad Joshi, addressed the 64th ISO Council meeting which began in New Delhi on Tuesday, June 25. In his address, Joshi said, “Biofuels will continue to be a powerful driver for Atmanirbhar and the sustainable future of Bharat.”

NEW DELHI: Union Minister of Consumer Affairs, Food, and Public Distribution, Pralhad Joshi, addressed the 64th ISO Council meeting which began in New Delhi on Tuesday, June 25. In his address, Joshi said, “Biofuels will continue to be a powerful driver for Atmanirbhar and the sustainable future of Bharat.”

As India is the world’s largest consumer of sugar and the second largest producer of sugar, Joshi said, “By utilizing biofuels, we are creating new opportunities for farmers. About 10 million farmers and their dependents are engaged in sugarcane cultivation. Additionally, the industry employs lakhs of people directly and indirectly, Joshi noted.”

Addressing the workshop “Sugar and Biofuels: Emerging Vistas” during the 64th International Sugar Organisation-ISO Council Meeting,  Joshi said, “India is committed to playing a leading role in shaping a sustainable future for sugar.” He emphasized that the future of sugar demands a multidimensional approach that is sustainable, equitable, and secure. He also stressed, “The focus is not only on enhancing farm productivity but also on minimizing water use, advancing technology across the sugar chain, increasing efficiency, and decreasing waste.”

Joshi underscored the importance of balancing the interests of consumers, farmers, and industry in any formulation of plans. He urged workshop members to collaborate and brainstorm strategies for cultivating crops with minimal water usage yet maximum productivity. Mr Joshi highlighted sugarcane’s growing significance in clean fuel production, noting its elevated value.

 

“Sharing best practices and fostering research collaboration across nations is vital. Let us work together to develop high-yielding, disease-resistant sugarcane varieties, explore innovative uses for sugarcane, and promote sustainable practices throughout the value chain,” Joshi said in conclusion.

The event, running until June 27, has attracted delegates from over 30 countries and representatives from various international organizations on its first day. Discussing critical issues within the sugar and biofuel sectors, the meeting marks India’s hosting of the ISO meeting after a gap of 12 years. Mr. Joshi expressed hope for the emergence of new and innovative ideas aimed at enhancing farmer welfare, and consumer welfare, and addressing the imperative need for water conservation.
