KHAGARIA: Bihar’s infrastructure development has suffered a major setback as a significant portion of the under-construction Aguanhighat Sultanganj bridge collapsed into the Ganga river on Sunday. In response to the incident, Chief Minister Nitish Kumar has ordered a probe to investigate the matter. This bridge, intended to connect the districts of Khagaria and Bhagalpur, held immense importance for the state and was a key project of Chief Minister Nitish Kumar. The collapse has caused widespread panic, with reports of several missing workers.

The Aguwani Sultanganj bridge, with an estimated cost of 1,710 crore rupees, was expected to bring about a significant reduction in travel distances and enhance connectivity in North Bihar. Construction work on the bridge and its approach roads began in September 2015. However, the project encountered numerous delays, resulting in several extensions of the completion deadline. Originally scheduled for November 2019, the deadline was subsequently extended to July 2021.
Hopes were raised that the bridge would finally be completed by the end of 2023. Nevertheless, this is not the first time that a section of the bridge has collapsed, raising concerns about the quality of work and the actions taken by the state government.

The bridge collapse has also led to allegations of corruption from the opposition, who have questioned the repeated delays and the management of the project. They are demanding a thorough investigation into the matter. In response to the incident, Chief Minister Nitish Kumar has ordered a probe to identify those responsible for the collapse.
