NEW DELHI: Summers in India get hotter every year, and this year too, the heatwaves and scorching sun call for the cool showers of rain. The monsoon season is soon to arrive in North India, though in some parts it has already begun. July is the month when the rainy season spreads across the country. Along with the beautiful cloud sprinklers comes the season of diseases, allergies, and infections. Here are some tips to follow during the monsoon to stay healthy, fit, and disease-free.
Prevention from mosquitoes: Preventing mosquito bites is essential, as monsoon is the breeding season for mosquitoes. Don’t let water collect in nearby areas and use net doors to prevent them from entering your house. Water can also be collected in coolers, fridges, and AC compartments. This water should be removed and changed regularly. Gardens and plant pots can attract mosquitoes and other insects, so they should be taken care of as well.

Avoid street food: The rainy season brings coolness to the atmosphere and relief from the heat. However, it also brings the risk of diseases. While eating hot and spicy food is tempting, we must avoid street foods and overly spicy dishes, as they increase the chances of cholera, food poisoning, and diarrhea. Instead, opt for freshly home-cooked meals, and of course, some homely-made hot pakoras with tea.
Bathing after getting drenched in rainwater: Many of us enjoy a rain bath and dancing, Bollywood style, but the pollutants in rainwater these days can cause skin diseases and more. It is especially important not to bathe in the first rain, as it contains the most pollutants absorbed from the atmosphere, potentially resulting in acid rain. Even if we get drenched unintentionally, bathing in fresh water at home is crucial to avoid skin allergies and infections.
Carry an umbrella: The rainy season often brings sudden showers without warning. Sometimes, the weather looks clear and sunny, but it can turn cloudy and rainy the next moment. Always carry an umbrella to avoid getting drenched.
Drink filtered water: During the rainy season, muddy and dirty water can come out of taps at home. Always drink filtered or boiled water to avoid water-borne diseases.
