Congress has questioned the public sector bank’s decision to withdraw its auction notice
NEW DELHI: Bank of Baroda on Monday said that it will not go ahead with its plan to auction actor Sunny Deol’s property in Mumbai’s Juhu on August 25.
The bank cited “technical reasons” for its decision in a corrigendum to an earlier newspaper advertisement for the e-auction.
‘Sunny Villa’ belonging to actor Ajay Singh Dharmendra Deol alias Sunny Deol, who is also a Lok Sabha MP from Punjab’s Gurdaspur, was to go on sale for defaulting on a loan of ₹56 crore. The loan amount was reportedly declared non-performing asset (NPA).
The Deols had taken a film-financing loan in 2015-16 for the production of Ghayal Once Again, a sequel to Sunny’s hit ’90s movie. His Father Dharmendra and brother Bobby Deol were guarantors to the loan.
The land parcel, measuring 599.44 square meters, is situated at Gandhigram Road in Juhu.

The withdrawal notice kicked off a political controversy with Congress general secretary Jairam Ramesh suspecting foul play. “Yesterday afternoon the nation got to know that Bank of Baroda had put up the Juhu residence of BJP MP Sunny Deol for e-auction since he has not paid up Rs 56 crore owed to the Bank. This morning, in less than 24 hours, the nation has got to know that the Bank of Baroda has withdrawn the auction notice due to ‘technical reasons’. Wonder who triggered these ‘technical reasons’?” he wrote on X (formerly known as Twitter).

Sunny Deol’s latest movie Gadar 2 has taken the box office by storm, raking ₹375 crore in collections. Gadar 2 is a sequel to ‘Gadar: Ek Prem Katha’ which was released in 2001.
The film star recently faced criticism on social media for behaving “rudely” with his fan who requested for a selfie.
Back in Gurdaspur, locals have put up posters declaring him “missing” for his absence from his constituency. A poster reads: “Gumshuda ki talash – Sunny Deol, MP Gurdaspur”. Several protests have also been staged against the lawmaker in the constituency.
