NEW DELHI: Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina is set to visit New Delhi on June 21 for a two-day state visit at the invitation of Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

This visit is significant as it marks the first bilateral visit by a head of government to India after the BJP-led alliance formed its government for the third consecutive term.

The visit, which takes precedence over her planned trip to China in July, signals a potential shift in Dhaka’s foreign policy. It also follows closely on the heels of her last visit to India on June 9 for Modi’s swearing-in ceremony, making it her third trip to India since September 2023.

During her stay, key issues expected to be discussed include the development of the Teesta Special Economic Zone, the renewal of the Ganga Water Sharing Treaty, the supply of essential food items like wheat and onions, and the management of Mongla Port. The discussions will also address security concerns over China’s $1 billion proposal to develop the Teesta River, a border area project that has raised alarms in India.
